How Does It Work?

The first step in the process is when the AEC engages with the state or territory education officials and gains their  for introducing the P Plate program as an option in the range of vocational programs being provided to Indigenous high school students. While each state and territory is different, the department usually appoints a P Plate coordinator to oversee and manage the program’s implementation across the school system.

The P-Plate coordinator engages individual schools into the program. The school will appoint a P Plate Ambassador whose role is to prepare and support the students in their transition to life in the workplace, oversee the implementation of the P Plate curriculum and ensure that the parent/guardian of the students support and work with the student. The coordinator will support and develop the School Ambassador.

The School Ambassador is also the key contact for employers who are seeking work ready Indigenous students as future employees of their company.

The P Plate program is an opt-in program. The school chooses to participate and the individual students choose to be part of the program. The students are required to have the consent of a parent/guardian to participate.
