I am Indigenous and unemployed. Where can I get a job?
You can look for employment vacancies through the AEC job board whether you are registered with a Job Services Australia or not.
If you are registered with a Job Services Australia provider, ask your case manager to help you find an AEC job and undertake the required pre-employment training. If you are unemployed but don't yet have a job seeker identification number, you should either contact Centrelink to be interviewed, assessed and be allocated a job seeker identification number or, depending on your circumstances, register directly with a Job Services Australia provider.
Jobseekers without a job seeker identification number can also find vacancies directly through the Jobs Board.
What obligations do I have as an Indigenous job seeker applying for a position with an AEC employer?
After identifying an industry or job opportunity, Indigenous job seekers must complete the required job training to the best of their abilities, commit to stay in employment and to perform their job to the very best of their abilities. The AEC asks job seekers to accept the support and guidance of Workplace Buddies to face and overcome the challenges of keeping a permanent job.
What support will an AEC employer provide me with when gaining employment?
AEC employers have committed through the covenant to providing a supportive workplace, a workplace buddy and equal opportunity. After signing a Covenant, the AEC works with the employer to ensure they have practices in place to provide a supportive workplace for their Indigenous employees. If the employer requires it, the AEC runs a Workplace Buddy Workshop for existing employees who would like to be a friend in the workplace to new Indigenous employees. The employer must provide a Workplace Buddy for all new Indigenous employees through their commitment to the covenant.
What support does my Workplace buddy provide to me?
Above all, your Workplace Buddy is there to be a friend in the workplace. They are aware of the challenges of keeping a permanent job, and are there to provide you with support and guidance.
